Former Liverpool and Roma left-back John Arne Riise is set to join 2014/15 Maltese FA Trophy winners Birkirkara according to reports from Replay TV.

The UEFA Champions League winner could become part of the technical staff at the Stripes following discussions with the club over the last few weeks.

The 38-year-old called time on his playing career in 2016 following a brief spell with Indian club Chennaiyin FC who are currently managed by former England international John Gregory.

John Arne Riise (front row, far right) was part of Liverpool’s 2005 Champions League winning side.

Riise is no stranger to Malta as he visited Maltese tattoo artist Shawn Grech during the summer to get a picture resembling Zeus and the slogan ‘Brother For Life’ tattooed on his left arm.

Former Birkirkara star Justin Tellus expressed his delight in the news saying: “It would be great to have a former Liverpool and Roma Legend such as  John Arne Riise join the technical staff at my former club Birkirkara FC.”

Liverpool beat fierce rivals Manchester United 3-1 earlier this evening to go top of the Premier League. Xherdan Shaqiri came off the bench to score a brace giving the Reds a vital set of three points.
