Maltese giants Birkirkara have confirmed the signing of former Liverpool full-back John Arne Riise as their new Sporting Director. had reported that the 38-year-old was linked with the club last month.

An official club statement was released earlier today saying: “Birkirkara FC is delighted to announce that it has reached an agreement with John Arne Riise to take up the newly-created Sports Director role.

“John shall work together with the Club Technical Director, Mr. Michael Valenzia and Senior Team Manager, Mr. Jeffrey Farrugia in a new set-up which shall commence with immediate effect.

“Further details of the clubs plans for the future shall be published in the next few days.”

The Champions League winner took to Twitter this evening to express his delight at joining the Stripes: “[I am] proud to announce I am now the sporting director of Birkirkara FC.

“This is a challenge I look forward to and another step towards my goal to become a manager. Things will change at the club and I’m excited to start.”
