Valletta forward Mario Fontanella has picked up the Bank of Valletta Player of the Month award for October 2018. The 29-year-old signed for the Reds in the summer after a successful three-year spell with league rivals Floriana.
Fontanella currently tops the Premier League scoring charts with 10 goals, five of which have come against Balzan, Pieta and Mosta in the last month.
Speaking exclusively to MalteseFootball.com, the former Napoli forward expressed his delight for winning October’s Player of the Month award: “Winning the award for being the best player in the Maltese Premier League is a great satisfaction. I have to thank the players and the technical staff at Valletta FC for allowing me to win this award.
“Personally, this season I have scored 10 goals and picked up eight assists in nine BOV Premier League matches, I have played in two Champions League matches and also scored a goal in the Europa League. I hope to continue this form over the rest of the season.
“I came to Valletta FC with only one target and that is to win all the competitions in Malta. I am convinced that if we continue so strongly we can achieve this target.”
Fontanella scored 27 goals in 30 appearances for A.S.D. Pol. Calcio Budoni during the 2014/15 season.
The forward who wears the number 89 shirt went on to discuss how he hopes to continue his impressive form and beat his 2015/16 goal scoring record in Malta: “During the 2015/2016 season I scored 20 goals for Floriana winning the top scorer award for the BOV Premier League. That was my best season in Malta so far and this year I hope to do even better. I can only thank my team mates and the backroom staff at my current side, Valletta.”
Valletta are currently second in the BOV Premier League table with 21 points to their name after picking up seven wins from their opening nine fixtures. They are also the league’s top scorers with 29 goals, conceding just seven.
