Gżira United picked up their first win in four games with a 4-1 victory over Qormi FC on Saturday.

The Maroons remain in third place as they continue to fight for a Europa League qualification place.

Speaking after United’s 4-1 win, defensive midfielder Zack Scerri described the game as an important three points for his side.

“It was a must-win match for us, all the team were ready and up for the game,” said the 22-year-old.

“We trained very well during the week and a win was all that we wanted. The fact we have two teams that are behind us dropping points made this win even more important.”

Last month, Gżira appointed former Maltese international Jesmond Zerafa as their manager following the resignation of Darren Abdilla.

Scerri continued by speaking highly of his new boss: “Coach Jesmond has a lot of experience in football so it wasn’t difficult for him to interact with us.

“He has managed to motivate us and made us believe in ourselves.”

United’s next game is against Senglea Athletic F.C. on Saturday 9 March. The young midfield believes his side have what it takes to qualify for Europe this season.

“We have got a great team so I am very confident that we will qualify for Europe,” said Scerri.

“Right now we are in third place but it doesn’t mean anything as we still have games to play so we cannot stop here.

“We have to work harder so that we can secure our position at the end of the season.”
